January Flowers
Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) The snowdrop is one of the earliest flowers to appear. Although delicate-looking,
it withstands cold weather and can break through snow cover. Its pure white petals contrast with slender
green leaves. An elegant flower for a promising New Year!
Primrose (Primula vulgaris) Another early flower,
this delicate yellow blossom is an indication of the coming
spring.
Old Man's Beard (Clematis vitalba)
Also known as Traveller's Joy, in winter the seeds of this plant have silky coating which looks spectacular in
frost. This is a little more abstract than most kanzashi but uses the same materials and technique; I liked the
unusual forms of this plant, particularly how the shape suggests festive decorations, so kept it fairly
representational.
